Not an April Fool's joke

So, I was checking out the D&D Icons of Realms: Seas & Shores line of miniatures coming out from Wizkids, and there were quite a few miniatures I liked out of the set.

Give me 4-5 of those Seahorse riders and that could be a really fun encounter. Likewise, I love the Piranha representation and I know my characters would be terrified if I had 10 of those miniatures on the table at one time….it would be glorious. I even liked the Aarakocra figure……although (to me) it doesn’t fit the set.

Then I saw it. A figure so remarkably stupid - it only reinforced to me that WizKids really is out of ideas, and that they they will put anything out there to make money. I honestly had to do a double take to make sure today was not April Fool’s Day.

Of course, I am talking about the Maw of Sekolah figure.

Summoned from the shadowy depths of the ocean through ritual and tidal magic, the Maw of Sekolah appears in The Final Enemy chapter of Ghosts of Salmarsh, as the avatar of the hungry sahuagin god. This huge, two-headed shark is fed a steady diet of sentient creatures, captured by the sahuagin and offered up as tribute. Sahuagin priestesses adorn the fins of the maw of Sekolah with gemmed bands and polished skulls.

What made me do a double take on this figure and think this was a joke is 2-fold:

  • Why do a miniature for this in the first place? It is 100% a one-off monster that you will probably never use again.

  • Priced at $29.99, is anyone really going to buy this?

Don’t get me wrong, I think this is actually a pretty good set, and WizKids has gotten better with thier miniatures over the years, but this has to be a joke right? RIGHT? Please tell me this an early April Fool’s Joke or let me know down in the comments if you intend to pick this one up and actually USE it in a game.
