Review: My First Citadel Miniature

I’ve been table top gaming since my teens back when dinosaurs roamed the earth and rocks were soft. I started out with Grenadier miniatures and moved quickly to Ral Partha. I had some Maraduer miniatures back in the 90’s when I thought I might perhaps maybe want a dwarf army for warhammer but go sidelined into ACW Miniatures and THERE went all my time. From about 1995 to 2015 I was doing other things than gaming (Still involved swords though!). Never really got into 40K or Warhammer. Mostly because of the cost issue. And the constant rule revisions. And…. well, if you play you know. :D

I ordered my first Citadel a couple of weeks ago, just to see what they are like really. And if I were gonna go, I’d go big! So I looked at the Smaug miniature. HOLY COW!!!! $600!!!! Hmmm….. as cool as that would be…. NOT $600 worth of cool.

So I decided on the…….

I got the box, opened it up and was disappointed at the size. It looked bigger on my computer screen. The pieces were well done. Cleanly molded. Reminded me of the Tamiya tanks and planes I put together as a kid.

So I started to put it together. And I started seeing lots of gaps in the model.

And even MORE gaps…..

So off we go with the Green Stuff!

I think I used juuuuust about three pounds of the stuff……..

So coming down to the figure/cost/effort final analysis, I’m not inclined to buy any of the larger figures that Citadel produces. Lots of cost for what seems to be a lot of work just to get to the painting stage. Don’t get me wrong, I’m perfectly willing to time and effort but with the initial cost ($62 plus shipping) in this case I think Reaper and WizKids have a better Return on Investment.

YMMV
