Possible Mars Temple Found

I think it is safe to say that the majority of members here at Drunkards and Dragons are history buffs. We like all things history, and I know that I personally look at a lot of elements so that I can bring them to my games. That is why I was particularly excited to learn that Archaeologists have discovered a temple or sanctuary in northwest France that may have been dedicated to the Roman war god Mars, dating back to the first century B.C.

The site is part of a large Roman complex spread over 17 acres that was probably visited by Roman soldiers stationed in the area. The discovery was made at La Chapelle-des-Fougeretz, Brittany, a site that has been recognized for its archaeological remains since the 1970s.

The sanctuary seems to date back to the time when Julius Caesar conquered Brittany and was used until the fifth century A.D. Hundreds of everyday artifacts have also been unearthed, and the site expanded over time to include a small town with public baths and a cemetery containing about 40 tombs.

While a bronze statuette of Mars was discovered, other terracotta figurines of Venus and mother goddesses were also found, making it difficult to know which deity the site was dedicated to. There were no inscriptions or large statues found at the site, so the study of the objects discovered will be needed to propose complementary deities.
